Catania is eastern Sicily's engine: baroque streets in the shadow of Etna, and the perfect base for Taormina, Syracuse, the Etna wine country and the Riviera dei Ciclopi. Distances are short but buses are slow — this is one Italian region where a rental car transforms the trip.
Pick-up locations
Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) has the widest fleet choice; city offices near the central station serve those arriving by train or ferry. Compare both: Sicily's seasonal demand swings make advance comparison genuinely valuable.
Driving there
The A18 runs north to Taormina and Messina, the A19 west towards Enna and Palermo; both are fast and mostly free-flowing outside summer peaks. Catania's centre has ZTL areas and tight baroque streets — park at the edge and walk. Etna's summit roads are well paved but winding; check weather before heading up.
Good to know
In July and August, book as early as you can — Sicily sells out of automatics and small cars first. Rural fuel stations can close at lunch and on Sunday afternoons; keep the tank comfortable when exploring inland.
