Inside Paris, a car is a burden; beyond the périphérique, it is a key. Versailles, Giverny, Champagne, the Loire châteaux and the Normandy coast are all superb drives that start just outside the city. The smart move is to explore Paris first, then pick up the car.
Pick-up locations
The widest choice is at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY) airports. In town, offices at the major stations — Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon, Montparnasse — let you combine train and car travel. Compare both: airport and city pricing frequently differs for the same dates.
Driving there
Paris is a low-emission zone requiring a Crit'Air sticker on the windscreen; virtually all French rental cars carry one, but confirm if the car is registered abroad. The périphérique ring road is capped at 50 km/h with speed cameras. Autoroutes are tolled (péage) — cards accepted everywhere. Speed cameras are frequent and fines are forwarded by the rental company.
Good to know
Parking in central Paris is scarce and expensive; if you keep the car during a city stay, look for hotels with parking. Planning a one-way trip — for example Paris to Nice or into Belgium — is usually possible, with one-way fees that vary by supplier and are shown during booking.
