Car rental in Barcelona

Barcelona itself is walkable and well connected — but a rental car turns the trip into Catalonia: the Costa Brava coves, Montserrat's monastery, the Roman ruins of Tarragona and the Penedès wine country all sit within 90 minutes of the city.

01

Pick-up locations

Most travellers collect at Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN), where all major suppliers operate from Terminals 1 and 2. City offices cluster around Sants station and the Eixample — a good option if you have spent a few days in town first. Comparing both pick-up points is worthwhile, as pricing often differs.

02

Driving there

Barcelona's low-emission zone (ZBE) restricts the most polluting vehicles on weekdays within the ring roads; modern rental cars are normally compliant, but check the vehicle class if in doubt. The B-10 and B-20 rondas bypass the centre. Several former toll motorways towards Girona and Tarragona are now free, while some tunnels and the C-32 coastal section remain tolled.

03

Good to know

Street parking in the centre is limited and garages are expensive, so plan to collect the car when you leave the city rather than keep it parked during your stay. If you intend to drive into France or Andorra, confirm the supplier's cross-border policy in advance.
