Car rental in Milan

Milan is the gateway to northern Italy: Lake Como, Lake Garda, Bergamo and the Alps are all within a couple of hours' drive. The city itself has excellent public transport, so most travellers compare rental deals online and collect the car when they head out of town.

01

Pick-up locations

You can pick up at three airports — Malpensa (MXP) for intercontinental flights, Linate (LIN) closest to the centre, and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) for low-cost carriers — or at city offices near Centrale and Porta Garibaldi stations. Airport fleets are generally larger; city offices save you the trip if you are already in town.

02

Driving there

Milan operates Area C, a congestion-charge zone in the centre on weekdays, and Area B which restricts the most polluting vehicles — check that your rental car complies before entering. The autostrade (A1, A4, A8/A9) are tolled; avoid Telepass lanes without a device. Parking in the centre is scarce and mostly paid.

03

Good to know

If you plan to cross into Switzerland — Lugano is about an hour away — you will need a motorway vignette, and some suppliers charge a cross-border fee or require prior notice. Always read the cross-border section of your rental conditions before booking.
