Car rental in Madrid

Madrid's metro covers the capital brilliantly, but Spain's geography makes the car king beyond it: Toledo, Segovia, Ávila, El Escorial and the Sierra de Guadarrama are all classic day trips that are far simpler with your own wheels.

01

Pick-up locations

The largest choice is at Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD), with rental centres at Terminals 1 and 4. In the city, offices around Atocha and Chamartín stations are convenient if you are combining train and car travel. Comparing airport and city pick-up is worth the minute it takes — prices often differ.

02

Driving there

Central Madrid is a low-emission zone (ZBE / Madrid Central area) with camera enforcement; hotel guests and compliant vehicles can usually enter, but check your accommodation's advice. The radial autopistas (R-roads) are tolled while the parallel A-road autovías are free and usually fast. Rush hours on the M-30 and M-40 ring roads are heavy.

03

Good to know

If your itinerary is Madrid plus Castile, the relaxed plan is: enjoy the city car-free, then collect the car on departure morning. Heading into Portugal is normally possible with a rental car, but cross-border terms differ by supplier — confirm before booking.
