Rome is a city best explored on foot — but a rental car opens up everything beyond it: the Castelli Romani hills, Tivoli's villas, the beaches of Ostia and the villages of Lazio and Umbria. Most visitors pick up their car when they leave the city rather than on arrival, and compare suppliers in advance to find the right balance of price, deposit and fuel policy.
Pick-up locations
The main pick-up points are Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) for low-cost flights, and city offices around Termini and Tiburtina stations. Airport pick-up usually offers the widest choice of vehicles and longer opening hours; city offices can be more convenient if you are already staying in the centre.
Driving there
Rome's historic centre is covered by ZTL limited-traffic zones enforced by cameras — entering one at restricted times leads to a fine, even in a rental car. The GRA ring road circles the city and the autostrade (motorways) are tolled; avoid lanes marked Telepass unless your car has the device. Blue lines mean paid parking, white lines are free where signed.
Good to know
Traffic is assertive and scooters filter constantly; allow extra time and keep calm at roundabouts. If your trip is Rome plus the countryside, a workable plan is to explore the city first and collect the car on the day you leave. Conditions such as deposits, fuel policy and cross-border rules vary by supplier — always check the rental terms shown before you book.
