Car rental in Lisbon

Lisbon's seven hills, trams and miradouros are best enjoyed on foot — but the city is also the start of one of Europe's great coastal drives. Sintra's palaces, Cascais, the surf beaches of Ericeira and the Alentejo plains all reward having your own car.

Pick-up locations

Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) sits inside the city and hosts all major rental brands; city offices around Marquês de Pombal and the Oriente station area are convenient for late pick-ups. Because the airport is only 15 minutes from downtown, the choice between airport and city pick-up is mostly about price — compare both.

02

Driving there

Portuguese motorways use electronic tolls: some sections have no barriers at all and require a Via Verde device or plate registration — ask your supplier how tolls are handled before leaving the desk. In Lisbon, tram tracks, steep hills and tight historic streets favour small cars; blue-zone parking is paid and time-limited.

Good to know

Crossing into Spain with a rental car is normally allowed, but many suppliers require notice and some charge a cross-border fee — check the terms first. For Sintra, start early: parking near the palaces fills by mid-morning in high season.
