Car rental at Los Angeles International Airport

LAX is one of the world's busiest rental markets, and nearly all suppliers operate from dedicated lots a few minutes outside the terminal horseshoe. Comparing in advance is essential here — demand and prices swing hard with the season.

01

Pick-up locations

Rental companies pick up their customers at the purple 'Rental Car Shuttles' sign on the arrivals level of each terminal; shuttles run continuously to the off-airport lots. Allow 15–30 minutes from kerbside to counter at busy times. Check your voucher for whether your supplier is on the shuttle loop or further afield.

02

Driving there

From the rental lots you join the I-405 and I-105 quickly: Santa Monica in about 25 minutes, Downtown LA in 30, both traffic permitting. Freeways are free; avoid FastTrak express lanes without a transponder. Fuel stations on Aviation Boulevard and Century Boulevard are the standard last stops before returns.

03

Good to know

Build buffer time when returning: lot shuttles plus LA traffic mean a margin of 45–60 minutes before airline check-in is comfortable. If you arrive late at night, verify your supplier's counter hours — some close before the last flights land.
