Miami is the start of the Overseas Highway: drive south and the Florida Keys unroll island by island to Key West; drive west and you are in the Everglades within the hour. The city itself is spread out, and outside the Miami Beach core a car is close to essential.
Pick-up locations
Miami International Airport (MIA) hosts a large central Rental Car Center reached by the free MIA Mover train. City and neighbourhood offices in Downtown, Brickell and Miami Beach are useful if you arrive by cruise or stay walkable first. Compare both — airport and city pricing often differs.
Driving there
Florida's toll roads are almost entirely cashless: SunPass or plate billing only. Rental suppliers offer toll programmes with daily fees or bill tolls plus admin charges later — check the toll policy carefully, as fees vary widely. Driving is on the right; right turns on red are allowed after a full stop unless signed otherwise.
Good to know
Parking in South Beach is limited and pricey — factor it into hotel choices. Non-English licences should travel with an International Driving Permit, and the main driver usually needs a credit card for the deposit. Hurricane season runs June to November; keep an eye on forecasts if travelling then.
