Trapani Birgi (TPS) is the small, fast airport of western Sicily: the medieval hilltown of Erice, the Marsala salt pans, the temples of Segesta and the ferries to the Egadi islands are all within half an hour. If your trip is the west of the island, TPS beats Palermo hands down.
Pick-up locations
Rental desks are in the arrivals area, with cars parked just outside the compact terminal. Flights here are highly seasonal — check desk opening hours against your flight time, and book early in summer when the small fleets sell out.
Driving there
The A29dir motorway links the airport to Trapani city (20 minutes) and to Palermo (about 1h15). Erice is a 30-minute climb; Segesta 30 minutes inland. Roads are quiet by Sicilian standards. No tolls on these stretches.
Good to know
For the Egadi islands (Favignana, Levanzo), leave the car at Trapani's port — the islands are best by hydrofoil and bike. If you plan to take a rental car on any ferry, confirm the supplier's ferry policy in the rental terms first.
